If your customers come from specific cities or neighborhoods, local search is often the most valuable channel you have. The good news: most of what moves the needle is within your control. Here is the checklist we start with.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is frequently the first impression a local customer gets.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary categories.
- Fill in services, service areas, hours (including holiday hours) and a clear description.
- Add real photos of your team, work and premises.
- Keep your name exactly as it appears on your signage and legal documents — adding keywords to your business name breaks Google’s guidelines.
2. Make your name, address and phone consistent
Search engines cross-check your business details across the web. Make sure your name, address and phone number (NAP) match everywhere: your website, profile, social accounts and major directories.
3. Build pages for the places and services you actually cover
A single “Areas we serve” list rarely ranks. Instead, create useful pages for your core services and key locations — with genuinely local detail, not copy-and-paste text with the city name swapped.
4. Earn reviews the right way
Reviews influence both rankings and decisions. Ask happy customers consistently, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for positive ones — it violates platform policies and erodes trust.
5. Fix the technical basics
- Make sure your site is fast and works well on mobile.
- Add
LocalBusinessstructured data with your details. - Put a clickable phone number on every page.
6. Track calls and form submissions
Rankings are a means to an end. Set up conversion tracking so you can see which pages and searches actually produce enquiries.
